WOWZINO kicked the weekend off in some style when he powered to his second career victory at the Sunshine Coast on Friday night.
The son of Tarzino broke his maiden at the Sunny Coast in mid-August, and promptly preserved his 100 per cent record on his home track when he left his rivals trailing in his wake in the Class 1 Plate (1800m).
WOWZINO was asked to shoulder the topweight of 60kg, but despite the impost the well-backed favourite never gave his supporters any cause for concern as he raced clear under Ryan Maloney to win by two lengths.
“I was wondering whether we were far enough in front after the turn, but I needn’t have worried,” said David.
“He doesn’t have a big sprint but he does have that high cruising speed that you need. There were a few within touching distance of him coming into the home bend, so I thought he’d have to give a good kick and that’s exactly what he did. The further they went, the stronger he got, so it was a really good win in the end.
“We were planning to run him in the [Queensland] Derby, but he wasn’t going well enough so we tipped him back out and gave him a longer spell. He really blossomed during his time off and he’s come back a more mature horse this time, he’s also got more strength and you could see that in the way he finished off his race tonight.”
WOWZINO became the second horse to honour the memory of Robert Powell, with stablemate KEITEL carrying his late owner's colours to victory last Sunday.
His second career win took WOWZINO's career earnings past $80,000 from nine starts, many congratulations to all his owners: Dr C G Lawler, Mr D G Willis, Symphony Racing, Mr J P Bergin, Mr R A Pegum, Mr W Goldthorp, Mrs K E Goldthorp, Mr R T J Boidin, Ms G Hollis, Mr G Jones, Mrs M M Dignam and Mrs V A Smith.
