NEW SEASON OFF TO A FLIER WITH HOME TRACK QUINELLA

RED SAMOVAR became the stable’s first winner of the new season when the mare streaked clear to shed her maiden status at the Sunshine Coast.
Having lined up in city races at her two previous starts, the daughter of Russian Revolution was dropping in grade in Sunday’s Maiden Plate (1400m) and she duly made the most of her opportunity.
Fresh from his convincing win in the Brisbane metro jockeys’ premiership, Ben Thompson took the reins for the first time this prep and the pair enjoyed their reunion with a two-and-a-half length win over stablemate RANGER'S PRIDE.
“I thought we ticked quite a few boxes coming here today,” said Thompson.
“I didn’t think the wide barrier was going to be too much of a problem, because at least we could be masters of our own fate. She jumped super, and I was keen not to give away that advantage. She relaxed really nicely, gave a good kick in the straight and it was a lovely win.
“She’s going to get better at a craft, and I definitely think she’ll get out to a mile in time. She’s also pretty versatile on any surface, which should make placing her much easier.”
