WOWZINO surged past $100,000 in prizemoney earnings after he led from pillar to post at Eagle Farm on Melbourne Cup Day.
After a valiant minor placing at Doomben at his last start, the 4YO son of Tarzino dropped in trip to 1800m in Tuesday’s Benchmark 65 Handicap and promptly bolted in under her new pilot Angela Jones.
The pair pinged the lids and controlled proceedings, with Jones pressing the accelerator early before pinching some easier sectionals on the race favourite.
Despite carrying the joint topweight of 60.5kg, WOWZINO appeared to have plenty in hand in the home straight and he duly came away from his rivals to score by nearly three lengths.
“He pulled up exceptionally well,” said David.
“The first 1200 metres was run as quickly and he still stuck it out for another 600 metres, so it was a great effort. It was very impressive and I was equally impressed with the ride, because she took the bull from the horns and it was exciting to watch.
“There’s another suitable race in two-and-a-half weeks over 2200 metres at the Sunshine Coast, and he’ll probably drop about five kilos in the weights. We’ll plan to get Ange Jones back on board and hopefully he can give another good account of himself.”
Victory extended a prosperous prep for WOWZINO which has so far yielded three wins and a minor placing from five starts.
Many congratulations to his owners: Dr C G Lawler, Mr D G Willis, Symphony Racing, Mr J P Bergin, Mr R A Pegum, Mr W Goldthorp, Mrs K E Goldthorp, Mr R T J Boidin, Ms G Hollis, Mr G Jones, Mrs M M Dignam and Mrs V A Smith.
