GROENING TAKES THE ROCKY ROAD TO VICTORY

GROENING powered home under a super steer by Ryan Wiggins to collect the first win of his career at Rockhampton.

The 3YO made Friday's long trip to Callaghan Park a very worthwhile exercise after returning home with the winner’s cheque.

Following a clean getaway from the barriers, GROENING sat close to a frenetic speed in the early stages of the QTIS Maiden Handicap (1100m).

Shortly after straightening, Wiggins peeled the son of Portland Sky to the outside and the pair eventually reeled in the race favourite to score by half-a-length.

“I probably didn’t expect him to bounce from the gates and be that close,” said Wiggins.

“He was travelling a bit keenly, but we managed to get into a pretty nice position in the run. It took him a long time to get into his rhythm, but when he did he really put in a strong effort. It should be a nice stepping stone for him, and if he learns to relax then he should get out to 1400-metres no problem.

“He would have learned a lot from today, and there’s a fair bit of upside to the horse.”

Many congratulations to all his owners: Irwin Racing, Harris Family Racing, Mr F W Mitchell, Mr S M Duchen, Mr A M Rowley-Bates and Belannah Stud.
