SON OF REDWOOD STAYS ALL DAY

WEONA REDWOOD produced a tough staying performance in heavy conditions at Beaudesert to register his fourth career victory.

The 4YO son of Redwood is bred to stay, and he needed every ounce of stamina to carry 60.5 kilos to victory in Friday’s Benchmark 60 Handicap (2450m).

Given a peach of a steer by apprentice Rob Thorburn, who took two kilos off his back, Weona Redwood relished the dogfight in justifying race favouritism with a one-length win.

“He was very good today,” said Thorburn post-race.

“I thought we’d take luck out of the equation by rolling forward. During the middle stages, we were taken on a bit but I had him tucked away on the fence, breathing nicely and relaxed.

“I think he’s a momentum horse, so you need to get him going nice and early. I thought we were never in doubt at the 200-metre mark, because I knew he’d be strong and in for the fight.”

Victory took his career earnings past $80,000 from 12 starts, many congratulations to the Jones family.
