ZORAYDAH shed her maiden tag with a devastating burst of late speed to cap a weekend treble for the stable at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
The mare won from a seemingly impossible position under a strong Ben Thompson ride to continue the stable’s red-hot recent record.
After a long spell in the paddock to give her time to mature both physically and mentally, ZORAYDAH returned with a slick trial win and carried that form into her third career start.
The 4YO found herself trapped on the fence behind a wall of horses, and with the leader establishing a commanding lead it looked as though the bird had flown the nest.
But Thompson and Zoraydah had other ideas, as they cut a swathe through the field and collared the frontrunner in the shadows of the posts to score an unlikely victory.
“She backed up her really good trial performance from 12 days ago,” said Thompson.
“I hadn’t envisaged us being last, but the other horses mustered a bit better than us so we didn’t have too much of a choice. We had to be patient from the position we were in, but when she hit top gear she was simply awesome. I didn’t want to get there too early but I always felt like we were going to catch the leader. So it was a great win, and I’m sure her owners are going to have a lot of fun with her.”
The victory was the third from our last four starters following weekend wins from NEVER GIVE UP (Sunshine Coast) and THE FACE (Doomben).
Congratulations to ZORAYDAH’s owners from Heran Racing.
