ROSSO LEVANTO RETURNS IN STYLE

ROSSO LEVANTO came home with a wet sail at Eagle Farm to register an important first city success for her owner-breeder Gerry Harvey.   

Having trialled up a treat on her home track in late June, the lightly-raced mare promptly carried that momentum into Wednesday’s Class 1 Handicap (1400m). 

Given a patient ride by apprentice Corey Sutherland, ROSSO LEVANTO moved into a more prominent position but still looked to have her work cut out to catch the runaway leader. 

Once she had engaged top gear, however, the five-year-old was able to reel in the race favourite with a nose separating the pair on the line. 

“She’s not always the easiest mare to deal with, but the team presented her really well here today,” said Sutherland. 

“She was in a good frame of mind and if anything she was probably a little too relaxed in the barriers, which is maybe why she stepped away a little slowly. But it didn’t matter as she ended up in a pretty good spot in the run. 

“It turned into a bit of a sit and sprint because they didn’t go too hard out the front, so she showed pretty good dash to win. We know she gets a mile or even further, so for her to pin her ears back and win first-up over 1400 metres was a good effort. She’s still only lightly-raced so I’m sure there’s a lot more to come from her.”   

Victory took her earnings past $50,000 from nine career starts, many congratulations to Mr Harvey.
