A strong staying performance at the Sunshine Coast on Friday saw MISTING claim her second career victory and enter Queensland Oaks calculations.
The filly relished the step up to 1800m second-up under Jag Guthmann-Chester, whose first ride on the filly produced a determined victory which carried her earnings close to $50,000.
The pair broke cleanly and settled three pairs back in the early stages of the Benchmark 65 Handicap, with MISTING relaxing comfortably into her stride before increasing the tempo rounding the turn.
The daughter of Cosmic Force sailed past her rivals in the straight and although she was challenged late in the piece, she showed plenty of fight to prevail by a long neck and justify race favouritism.
“There were no pre-race instructions to Jag, and I’m glad there weren’t because we thought she would settle a bit further back than she did,” said David.
“But she broke well and slotted into a lovely position. I like the way she picked them up so quickly, she might have hit the front a bit too quick because she might have switched off a bit. But going to the line, you could see her pin her ears back and she wanted to win.
“We have spoken about the Oaks with this filly previously, her major owner Bob Jones won the Oaks with Gypsy Goddess a few years ago. This girl probably has enough prizemoney now to get into the race, so we’ll see how she pulls up and we might accept next week.”
Congratulations to Bob and his fellow owners: Mrs D M Jones, Mr D M White, Mr B R Turville, Mr D N Gillingham and Mr T Prodromou.
