MAKING EYES relished her front-running role to break her maiden in some style at the midweek metropolitan meeting at Ipswich.
David took some tactical device from the filly’s regular trackwork rider to lead from the front, and the pre-race plan worked to perfection as MAKING EYES duly dashed away with the $22,000 first prize.
Taken straight to the front by new jockey Damien Thornton, the daughter of Churchill set a controlled tempo in the early stages of the Maiden Plate (2190m).
With the race favourite seemingly stuck in traffic at the rear of the field, Thornton seized the initiative and MAKING EYES extended her lead shortly after rounding the turn.
The pair were left in splendid isolation with 200m left to run, and the winning margin of 2.5 lengths spoke volumes of the ease of the victory.
“We had thought about selling her online, but now I’m very glad that we didn’t,” said David.
“It was her trackwork rider who noticed that in her gallops, if she sat off another horse she just looked at it and didn’t want to race it. But if she’s in front, she just keeps galloping and that’s what happened today. We tried it last start when she ran a good fourth on the worst part of the track, and today it was the perfect opportunity to lead all the way over the extended trip.
“She was on the bridle all the way and she seemed to do it easy out front, so I have to thank Lou her trackwork rider for the win. She’s by a Galileo stallion and her third dam won the Oaks, so she’s bred to get over a trip and she should get better with age.”
Many congratulations to the Jones family and their fellow owner Samuel Mayer.
