BOONDOCKS put the exclamation point on a wonderful weekend when he broke through for his first victory for the stable at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
Dropping in trip to 1400m on his home track, the former Victorian was very strong late to seal our fourth winner after TUFF TU MUS, NOBLE DECREE and WEONA REDWOOD had saluted on Saturday.
Despite a slightly tardy start to the Class 3 Handicap, BOONDOCKS settled far better than he has done previously which vindicated the decision to remove the blinkers.
The 4YO was given a canny steer by new rider Ryan Wiggins, with the pair diving up in the inside to overhaul their rivals and prevail by a length.
“His start was only mediocre but I was able to give him a couple of digs to take up a reasonable position in running,” said Wiggins.
“Fortunately they went along at a decent tempo which enabled him to settle nicely. Once he settled and relaxed, I had to make a decision in the straight on whether to come out or go up in the inside. I chose to go inside and it worked out well, so hopefully the win gives him a bit of confidence.
“He was dropping back in grade today so if he couldn’t win that race, we were probably in a little bit of trouble. But he put them away nicely, so hopefully it’s onwards and upwards from here and he might be able to pick off a race in town.”
Victory extended the stable’s red-hot streak, with our last eight runners having now produced four winners and four minor placings.
Many congratulations to the team at Makybe, who bred the son of Zoustar, and his part-owner Anthony Ciconte.
