BETTER DRAW continued the stable’s hot recent streak when he shed his maiden status with a tough display at the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The son of Savabeel appreciated the rise in distance to 1800m and the return to a firmer surface as he broke through at career start number seven in the Maiden Plate.
Ridden a treat by new jockey Ryan Wiggins, BETTER DRAW engaged in a three-horse duel down the home straight and eventually got the better of his rivals to prevail by a short half-head.
“We probably wouldn’t want it over again but I’m glad he got the job done,” said David.
“When they straightened and he peeled off their backs, I thought he was going to win by a margin but it was still great to see him finally win a race. He’s mixed his form a little bit so hopefully today’s win helps switch him on.
“He had his ears pinned back and really attacked the line, so he’ll take a lot of benefit from the experience and being by Savabeel, he should only improve with age.”
Victory brought up the stable’s third success from our last seven starters, congratulations to his patient group of owners: Mr R S Jones, Mrs D M Jones, Mr S P Mayer, Mrs M M Mayer, Mr P J Harvison, Mr D R Ind, Mr C W Stringer, Mrs J Stringer, Mr M D Wiener, Mr J Wiener and Mr S Eckstein.
