BELLS OF STEEL SHOWS HER METTLE

BELLS OF STEEL made a dream start to her new life in Queensland when the recent recruit scored a midweek city success on her stable debut at Doomben.

The mare made her way north from Victoria at the back end of last year, and after warming up for her competitive bow in the Sunshine State with a pair of trials, she promptly made the best possible first impression with a gritty win in Wednesday’s Class 1 Plate.

The daughter of Dundeel should relish stepping up in trip as she gets deeper into her prep, but she still had enough zip in her legs to kick off her Queensland career in style over 1350m.

After being trapped wide in the early stages, jockey Jasper Franklin wisely opted to seize the initiative and took BELLS OF STEEL to the front.

The intelligent move paid dividends as, despite being challenged and even headed in the home straight, the five-year-old mare still had enough petrol in the tank to see off her rivals and claim a cheque for $21,000.

“I didn’t know much about the mare when she came up to us, but that was a great win,” said David.

“We’ve taken our time with her, Heran Racing are great to train for because they’re very patient. She’s bred to get further, but she handled the 1350 metres really well. They went quite slow and it turned into a sprint home, but I thought she was gone at the 200-metre mark.

“But she fought back really well and ran through the line strongly, so it’s exciting for her owners to get a metropolitan win first-up.”

Many congratulations to the team at Heran Racing.
