CHERISH THE DAY produced a peak performance to score her second successive win at Ipswich’s midweek metropolitan meeting.
The gorgeous grey broke through for her first win in Queensland following a successful protest at the same venue two weeks previously, but on this occasion there was no need for the stewards to intervene as she raced away to an emphatic victory by two-and-a-half lengths.
CHERISH THE DAY enjoyed a strong tempo with jockey Ryan Maloney settling the daughter of Capitalist in a prime position in the early stages of the 1700m contest.
Once Maloney had asked the mare to sweep past the leader shortly after straightening, she promptly showed her remaining rivals a clean pair of heels to bring up career win number three in some style.
“I wasn’t sure if she was over the top or spot on today, and fortunately it was the latter,” said David post-race.
“She’s been driving us half mad at home but she more than made up for it today. It was a bit of an experiment to step her up in trip to 1700 metres last time, she’d hit the line nicely over 1350 metres at her previous start so we thought we’d try her out over the longer trip.
“If it hadn’t worked out she was going to be retired and become a Mum, but now she’s won two in a row the plans might have changed. It was a huge performance today, her turn of foot was very sharp and the way she attacked the line would suggest she might even get 2000 metres.
“I’m delighted for the owners, they thought the racing up here would suit her and they’ve been on board with our plans to step her up in trip. She’s been improving all the time and today she was 100 per cent fit and ready to go.”
Many congratulations to the team at Brookdale Racing.
