ACAPULCO GIRL STORMS HOME

ACAPULCO GIRL showed speed and strength in equal measure when she enhanced her terrific race record with a second win at Eagle Farm on Wednesday.

Having come through a bumping duel in the straight, the filly carried her earnings past $50,000 from just four starts which have now produced two wins and a pair of placings.

After an even break from the gates, Ryan Maloney took his medicine and elected to settle the daughter of Contributer towards the rear of the field in the early stages of the Class 1 Handicap (1200m).

Once Maloney had peeled her to the outside and given her a shake of the reins, ACAPULCO responded with a surge and showed great tenacity to withstand the interference to score by more than a length.

“I liked the way Ryan made a very quick decision at the start of the race to take her back,” said David.

“The intention was to go forward, but once he realised he wouldn’t be able to take up a prominent position he jagged her straight back and put her to sleep. She copped a pretty nasty check at the 250-metre mark, but she’s a very tough filly so I knew it would only spur her on.

“We’ve always had a high opinion of her. At her last start she was a bit green and still learning what to do, but I loved the way she attacked the line here today and I think she’s in for bigger and better things.”
